California Speed Contests Charges and Penalties

What are Speed Contests or Racing?

A person who engaged in a motor vehicle speed contest which includes racing against another vehicle, a clock, or other timing device. However, if the event in which the time to cover a prescribed route of more than 20 miles is measured, but where the vehicle does not exceed the speed limits, is not a speed contest.

How are Speed Contests or Racing different from Speeding?

The difference between a speeding ticket and a speed contest ticket is that a speed contest includes racing against a vehicle, a clock, or other timing device. Speeding in general does not include racing, just exceeding the speed limit.

What is the Punishment?

A person convicted of speed contest or racing in California can be punished by imprisonment ranging from twenty-four hours to ninety days, a fine of $355.00 to $1,000.00, or both.  Additionally, forty hours of community service must be completed, and the court may suspend the person’s driver’s license for a period of ninety days to six months.

If the person who is convicted of speed contest or racing and causes bodily injury or serious bodily injury or it is their second conviction of speed contest or racing, the punishment can range from imprisonment for thirty days to six months, a fine of $500.00 to $1,000.00 or both.
